Four Mile Beach
Four Mile Beach in Santa Cruz is a scenic, secluded spot known for its rugged coastline and natural beauty. Located within Wilder Ranch State Park, it requires a short hike to access, making it a quieter alternative to more crowded beaches. Four Mile has something to offer for experienced surfers, hikers, birdwatchers, and sunbathers; swimming is not recommended due to strong currents. A shallow reef lies on the upcoast side of the beach, while the downcoast (southern) end features a steep sandy drop-off which can create hazardous currents. Both areas require caution, especially during shifting tides or above-average wave activity. Hiking trails through Wilder Ranch connect Four Mile to Three Mile Beach, offering spectacular coastal views along the way. Always check tide schedules before visiting, stay off unstable cliffs, rocks, intertidal areas already wet from wave activity, and never turn your back on the ocean. There are no lifeguards at this location. If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 911 immediately. Parking is available along Highway 1, but the lot is unpaved and can be rough—drive slowly and use caution, especially if your vehicle has low clearance. There are no facilities on-site—please pack out all trash and belongings to help protect this natural area. A trail leads down to the beach through coastal bluffs. Closed: Sunset to 6:00 AM
