Waddell State Beach is known for its strong winds and powerful waves, drawing experienced surfers, windsurfers, and kiteboarders. Located along Highway 1 at Rancho Del Oso, the coastal portion of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, it offers stunning rugged coastal views. [Note: Big Basin hiking trails in this area remain closed due to damage from the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex wildfire.] Ocean conditions are hazardous, with strong rip currents and cold water year-round. The mouth of Waddell Creek can create especially dangerous currents. Visitors should be aware that there are no lifeguards and swimming is not recommended. Emergency response times may be delayed due to the remote location along the border of Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties. If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 911 immediately. Waddell State Beach sits in the middle of Año Nuevo State Marine Conservation Area, part of a globally recognized biodiversity hostpot. Both commercial and recreational fishing are prohibited in this area. Closed Sunset to 6:00 A.M.
